The primary function of the VACP is to facilitate communication and cooperation
among all community psychiatrists to better provide and guide quality psychiatric
care in Virginia. The VACP began at a meeting of psychiatrists in 10/00 from
several CSBs and Western State Hospital. At the next meeting in 1/01 the VACP
was named and formally launched with officers elected. You are already a "member"
of the VACP if you are a psychiatrist that works full-time or part-time in
a: * Community Service Board/ Community Mental Health Center * State Hospital
or Training Center * University Psychiatry Residenty Program involved with
community care * Prison or Jail Work within these settings creates unique
needs and challenges. In many ways the VACP is philosophically and conceptually
aligned with the American Association of Community Psychiatrists (AACP) and
our plan is to work in full cooperation with the Psychiatric Society of Virginia
(and therefore with the APA). However we want the VACP to be an inclusive
organization in which membership is simply a result of the work affiliation.
At our third meeting in 5/01 Phil Hirsh M.D., Medical Director of Central
Virginia Community Services, in Lynchburg proposed the following Mission Statement
which is shown below. We are accepting revisions and a final version will
be voted on at the 9/22/01 meeting. This site is funded by AstraZeneca. Web
